And in case you're wondering...

What does IMENURU mean?

The name IMENURU was inspired by the French play "Art" by Yasmina Reza. In "Art", three longtime friends, Marc, Serge, and Yvan, get in an argument when Serge buys a work of modern art: a white canvas with fine white lines on it. The argument is ostensibly about the question: What is "art"? Can a plain white canvas qualify as "art"? But at its core, the argument is about Serge breaking out of his traditional role in the relationship, where historically he has looked to Marc for guidance on issues of art and culture. Serge's spurt of independence in buying an expensive work of art without Marc's input, let alone one that Marc does not approve of, changes the dynamic of their relationship.

Yvan explains the situation to his therapist, who responds with this gem:

If I'm who I am because I'm who I am and you are who you are because you are who you are, then I'm who I am and you're who you are. If on the other hand, I am who I am because you're who you are, and if you're who you are because I'm who I am, then I am not who I am and you're not who you are...

which I suspect was translated more verbosely than necessary because it adds to the humor of the scene. The quote in the original French was:

Si je suis moi parce que je suis moi, et si tu es toi parce que tu es toi, je suis moi et tu es toi. Si, en revanche, je suis moi parce que tu es toi, et si tu es toi parce que je suis moi, alors je ne suis pas moi et tu n'es pas toi...

which, translated literally, is a bit more simple:

If I am me because I am me and you are you because you are you, then I am me and you are you. If on the other hand, I am me because you are you, and if you are you because I am me, then I am not me and you are not you...

Still don't get it? Try spelling IMENURU out loud.
